Diplohack Athens event: Athens among the first in generating ideas to improve EU transparency

Early in April 2016 (8-10 April), the first-ever Diplohack Athens took place, a 3-day hacking competition on EU-transparency and open data, organized by the Netherlands Embassy in Athens and Impact Hub Athens. The event took place in the context of the Netherlands’ EU Presidency during the first semester of 2016.

Dr. Michalis Vafopoulos, ODI Athens, was part of the judging panel which oversaw more than 40 participants -researchers, diplomats, developers, journalists, social entrepreneurs, designers and active citizens- divided in six teams committed themselves to a wide array of topics related to either improving the transparency of EU decision making, or making already existing and available open data, more accessible to European citizens. The participants of Diplohack Athens, which took place at Orange Grove, put effort into answering the call of Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Bert Koenders who challenged EU citizens to “open up the black box of Brussels”.

Innovative IT solutions included topics such as climate change, healthcare, financial streams, EU-funding, the Greek bailout program and EU-legislation. The winning team came up with the idea of developing a game in which users can step into the shoes of key EU decision makers, to experience their daily jobs. The team won two return tickets to the first-ever European Transparency Camp which is to be held in Amsterdam in June, apart from a six-month membership of Impact Hub Athens.

The results of Diplohack Athens will be shared with the European institutions and the Greek Government. Next hackathons on the same topic will take place in Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Brussels, Vienna and Stockholm.

Dutch ambassador Caspar Veldkamp was pleased with the outcome of Athens’ first-ever Diplohack: “This event generated several good ideas on how to improve transparency in EU decision-making. It is clear that there is plenty of young talent available in Greece.”
