A very successful event on Open Data was organised downtown Athens, Greece on Wednesday 25 October by ODI Athens. The event was organised in collaboration with SciFY, SKEL Lab of the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, GFOSS and was sponsored by EU project Your Data Stories.
Speeches were held by prominent members of the Greek Open Data community including business executives and research experts in the field. Innovative projects and ideas that promote the use and development of open data in all facets of daily living were presented.
One of the positive outcomes from the event is the affirmation that the technological and business community invests in the future and development of Big Data, seeking mechanisms and platforms for maximum data and meta-data recovery. The detection and analysis of this data helps us distinguish the useful information and to dissociate it from the “noise”. This is crucial for experts to be able to judge information credibility and to ultimately predict with greater certainty future situations, market trends and even social behaviour.
Finally, special emphasis was given during the presentations and discussion to the ways of maintaining a balance between the privacy and openness of data, whilst remaining legal. It’ s worth noting that despite the participation of many speakers at the event, the content of the presentations was comprehensive, concise and gave an integrated approach, both on business and research levels.
Impressively enough, the speakers, who had a high level of technical expertise on Open Data, ensured that information was smoothly presented and easily understood even from those less experienced among the public. This practice led to a vibrant, open discussion with multiple questions and answers throughout the event.
